2023

Rosé of Grenache

We have long felt that many of our favorite expressions of Rosé were done through Grenache  and we had that in mind before we ever planted Horizon Vineyard. Our Grenache block sits to the southwest corner of the vineyard, soaking up the intense afternoon rays as the sun makes its way across the sky.

Our 100% Rosé of Grenache always starts off in stainless steel before migrating to neutral french oak barrels that round out the edges just a bit on this bright and refreshing wine. It takes you on a journey that begins with mouthwatering acidity and watermelon flavors, then evolves into mid-palate notes of apricot, strawberry, and dried Italian spices. These flavors linger across its subtly creamy texture and satisfyingly long finish.

Roussanne

Our Roussanne is a particular favorite of the local wildlife, with our 2021 fruit being completely lost to bees in a two day period. Thankfully, we’ve out-maneuvered them for now, leading to a wine that is one of the most special in the vineyard.

The 2023 offers flavors of bright citrus such as grapefruit and lemon up front on the palate, followed by mouth watering acidity on the back end that works harmoniously with layers of Meyer lemon, orange, pear, and pluot.

2022

Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauv Blanc was the first white varietal planted on the estate and has been showing off ever since and greeting people as they first enter the vineyard.

There is no mistaking which wine you’ve opened the second you pull the cork, as you’re immersed in the lush, vibrant aromas of pineapple and guava, followed by fresh green onion and basil notes that slowly emerge as the wine breathes. Bright acidity and crisp minerality spring to action at first sip, quickly followed by a mid-palate rush of rich tropical and stone fruit flavors. The smooth finish continues to showcase pineapple, passion fruit, and guava, with hints of apple, nectarine, and mint.

Apogee

Our GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre) red blend is comprised of varietals that are planted farther down Horizon’s valley slope, at the lowest point of the vineyard. Given that these blocks are the greatest distance below the vineyard’s horizon line, we named this blend Apogee, which refers to the moment when the moon’s orbit extends to its farthest point from the earth.

Tangent

Standing at the top of the vineyard provides a magnificent view of the horizon out west towards Sta Rita Hills and the ocean. If you imagine a horizontal line cutting across that horizon the single point at which that line touches the horizon is called the tangent. The idea of a tangent is very special to us as is this estate red blend as it represents the one wine we’ve made where we went off on a bit of a tangent creating a highly unusual blend of Petite Sirah and Mourvedre.

Grenache (Estate)

Grenache serves as an anchor of the Horizon lineup – it makes up our Rosé, serves as the predominant grape in our Apogee, provides a key role in our Lateral, and also stars as a single varietal bottling in two different offerings.

The 2022 Grenache practically jumps out of the bottle. Bright colors and aromas fill the glass showcasing notes of cherry, raspberry, fig, wrapped in dark chocolate. Mouthwatering acidity and freshness soon dance around the front of palate, giving way to layered notes of red cherry, raspberry, and vanilla, and followed by some soft hints of roasted Italian spices and even a touch of rhubarb on the inviting finish.

Grenache (Ballard Canyon)

Ballard Canyon is a historic AVA in Santa Barbara County serving as the home of legendary vineyards such as Jonata, Larner, and Stolpman. We are honored to be making wines from such a landmark and expressive place like Ballard Canyon.

Syrah (Estate)

Syrah is another key varietal that plays an important role for Horizon serving as both a key member of certain blends in addition to a standalone offering that we love to bottle on its own as well.
